With no apparent irony Justin Trudeau can switch from turning a swathe of his own people into the enemy within, a tactic direct from the dictator’s much thumbed handbook, to railing against an authoritarian such as Vladimir Putin of Russia. I would imagine that even Putin himself would allow a chuckle at that one!
Putin is an old-fashioned authoritarian in that he is quite happy to wade through blood but even he becomes sated in the end, whilst in sharp contrast Trudeau is of the new breed, the ones who are dictatorial because they are utterly certain of their moral superiority and entitlement because they know what is best for you. They will never be sated because they know they can never quite control every aspect of our lives despite their utter certainty that they are entitled to do so.
C. S. Lewis wrote a warning of such moral tyrants many years ago;
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience”
He was right then and his words ring true now. Nothing has changed in that regard so resist the moral tyrants such as Trudeau and Ardern just as much as you would resist a Putin.
